Super Scientists and Eager Engineers!

We are loving learning all about the fascinating world of toys through our STEAM unit.

This week Mrs Evans (clad in her lab coat) visited our class and we all became super scientists and eager engineers. Some of us even got to wear the lab coats too!

We are investigating how we can generate power from wind energy.

We watched a video on how to make a Square Paper Spinner toy.

We then had fun creating our own spinners and testing them under the wind (fan) in our classroom.

Watch our video! Spinning Around!

As with any scientific experiment some worked better than others and like REAL scientists we created our own hypotheses as to why. We are looking forward to recreating these and testing again.

Stay tuned!

A Toy World!

This term we are delving into the wonderful world of toys through our STEAM unit “A Toy World”. It’s a really exciting unit where we get to learn about the history of toys, look at data related to toys, the science behind some popular toys and also design, create and test some functional toys of our own.

We started by responding to the A Toy Story Survey. If you haven’t already submitted a response it’s not too late! The data gathered from the survey will be used and analysed by all of the stage 1 classes this term.

We looked at the responses so far and were amazed that 597 people had responded to the survey already. WOW! We discovered how to read the pie graphs and interpret the results.

We talked about the meaning of a hypothesis and how we could create our own by using the data from the surveys.

We worked in groups and each team had one pie graph to discuss. We then wrote our own group hypothesis based on the results.

What team work!
